The Haps at the Highball: Have the Time of Your Life at Our Night of Dirty Dancing!

Posted April 11, 2012 under Uncategorized.

Hey there, Highballers! It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that we’re pretty much obsessed with dancing. (Although if we needed a genius, we’ve got plenty of ‘em at Geeks Who Drink!) Every week, we offer an almost excessive number of opportunities for you to bust a move, from Motown Monday to Texas Thursday to the Action Pack ’80s Party on Friday, plus you can always learn new steps at our free swing and honky tonk classes. But this Saturday, we’re celebrating one of the greatest and most beloved icons of dance: Dirty Dancing! An amazing line-up of local musicians will be performing the entire soundtrack live, and we’ll even have our own Penny and Johnny to teach you some moves starting at 9:30PM. Even if you can’t conquer the lift, you’ll definitely have the time of your life.

In the greatest partnership since tequila and karaoke, we’ve combined bingo with edited versions of porn parodies. Because when you take out the sex, you’re left with hilariously surreal moments that offer a goldmine of amusement. We’re also throwing in some very special activities and giving away prizes! So come out and get frisky, because everyone’s a winner at Tittie Bingo. Hosted by the totes fierce Craig Ries!

Join us for team trivia hosted by John W. Smith and James Pound! Quizzes cover everything from train wreck celebrities to comic books to current events. Form a team of your friends or show up and make some new ones while enjoying Happy Hour priced drinks. Don’t expect to simply answer questions, because Geeks Who Drink takes trivia to the next level with off the wall activities and potentially embarrassing contests. Winners receive prizes and eternal glory!

Austin-based jazz phenoms Ephraim Owens, Red Young, and Brannen Temple transform into the explosively eclectic trio, Black Red Black. Individually, these musicians are powerhouses– Owens won the title of “Best Horn” from the Austin Chronicle, Young has played with superstars ranging from Dolly Parton to Tanya Tucker, and Temple has appeared on The Tonight Show and Soul Train. Put these three together, and the audience is in for the jazz ride of their life. For a preview, check out Ephraim’s recent appearance at the KUT studio.

Over the last decade James Hyland has had it so musically good as the central singer and songwriter of the popular and lauded South Austin Jug Band. So what to do for an encore? Go back to the essence of his solo career with the magical musical assistance of his old Jug Band cohorts, and, at the same time, enhance his own artistic brand that, as Performing Songwriter raves, “possesses a hypnotic power and an intensity that is emotionally captivating.” For Texas Thursday, James and his Joint Chiefs will be dishing out Americana and pop country that’s guaranteed to keep you swinging on the dance floor. And when you need a break, cool off with a $2 Lone Star or $3 local pint!

Show me a person who hasn’t yearned to dance just like Baby and Johnny, and I’ll show you a person who’s dead inside. Because seriously, is there anything more amazing than the smooth moves and swinging hips of DIRTY DANCING? We love it so much, we’re attempting to recreate that magic with our very own evening at Kellerman’s! Slip on your best dancing shoes and twist the night away to all of the songs from the soundtrack performed LIVE! You can dance the Merengue, get hot ‘n’ sweaty Staff Quarters-style and even attempt to do the lift (at your own risk, of course). We’ll even have instructors to show you all of the right steps, although they’ve been strictly directed not to have personal relations with the guests, if you know what I mean… The Dirty Dancing Soundtrack will be played live by Austin’s finest musicians with many special guest artists, including Abra Moore, Will Sexton, Bill Kirchen, Bruce Hughes, Jenifer Jackson, Noelle Hampton, Charlie Faye, Barbara Nesbitt, Mark Hallman, Gina Chavez, Ruby James and more!

Out of all of the days of the week, Monday definitely has the worst reputation. People dread it, talk bad about it on Facebook and even try to (unsuccessfully) deny its existence. Well, we at the Highball have decided to take pity on Monday and give it the makeover it so desperately needs. That’s why we’re offering our weekly series, Motown Monday, featuring the funky sounds of the Matchmaker Band and specialty cocktails. Come enjoy a little liquid comfort and dance away your stress on the dance floor! We guarantee that after one dose of Motown Monday, you’ll be saying, “TGIM!”
