In the relatively short amount of time The Highball has been lucky enough to be in Austin, there have definitely been some highlights. The Holiday Revue, a burlesque extravaganza, ranks up right at the top. You can thank the stunning Ruby Rockit for that. (Make sure and get your tickets to the Sweetheart Showcase soon. It will be standing room only and you won’t want to miss it.)
Dancing with Red Light Burlesque since 2005, her radiant looks and scintillating moves have left crowds always coming back for more. Not a moment too soon, Ruby is coming back to The Highball and bringing some of the finest burlesque performers in Texas who will melt your heart in the Sweetheart Showcase. She also took time to talk with us and let us know about how she came to be a pin-up and dance extraordinaire, as well as what we can look forward to at the next event.
Ruby perfected her moves on the west coast before coming home to Austin.
“I moved to Seattle and danced with the Glam-O-Rama Girly Show, explained Rockit. “I went independent. So I have toured the entire west coast with the Glam-O-Rama Girls. That’s how I got really experienced. It also allowed me to see how things are done in different cities.”
When Ruby came back, the landscape of burlesque performance had changed dramatically.
“Burlesque was pretty small here when I left,” said Rockit. “There were only two or three troupes. Then I came back and there were like seven. I went back with Red Light but it wasn’t doing much, so I decided to start doing my own thing. That’s where I am now. But I took over Red Light, so it’s mine now. It’s fun and we will be doing more Red Light events. Until then, we are doing Ruby Rockit Presents.”
Rockit promised that the acts for The Sweetheart Showcase will have more loving themes to fit the romantic weekend. The Showcase also provides Rockit with a chance to work with a variety of girls, something she is thrilled about.
“It’s fun because every troupe has different skills,” Rockit said. “We have Karen Hoops this time, who does a routine with hula hoops. That’s mindblowing. I have no hula hoop skills. We also have a special guest, Ginger Valentine, just for the Valentine show. She is from Dallas and is an awesome performer. She runs her own burlesque school there and teaches burlesque performance. She is easily one of the best performers in Dallas. Plus, she’s a cool girl. I only work with girls I get along with. There can sometimes be a lot of drama in the burlesque scene so I want to work with girls who are cool and respectful of the venue. It makes for a fun night on both ends for us. Ginger is a cool girl.”
When Rockit isn’t hosting the sexiest show in town, she dances with Dolls from the Crypt, the only horror themed dance troupe in Texas. Go to Dollsfromthecrypt.com for a scoop on the scene. She also performs with Children in Heat, The Misfits cover band, an act that Rockit says is unlike anything else she does.
“We are covered in blood and it’s wild, theatrical and disgusting,” said Rockit. It’s far more theatrical than the burlesque dancing.”
You can find Ruby Rockit at www.myspace.com/rubyrockit. She will also have a website coming out in the next few months. Also, make sure to check out her jaw dropping performances on YouTube and follow her on Twitter.
