Get Excited

Two visits to the Highball within 24 hours really drove home to me how quickly the Highball is moving along at this point. When I left the space around noon on Friday, they were still sanding the lanes and putting the pin setters in place. On Friday around noon I get word that the lanes were “shiny” and looked great. So I hightailed it over and was greeted not only with some lacquered lanes, but also what are certainly the most stylish ball returns I have ever seen. Also, the pin setters were all in place.

Tim joined me shortly after my arrival and we talked a little about the progress of the Highball. When Tim and I were talking about the ball returns, he pointed out that these are old fashioned, over-lane ball returns. You will be able to see your ball returning to you down the lane. Incidentally, the bowling gear is being restored by Jay Gordon at Blackout Signs and Metal Works in San Marcos. When we began talking more generally about the place, he said that he is very optimistic about opening the Highball for Fantastic Fest (September 24 – only 17 days away), he gave me a rundown of what we can expect to happen next. Currently there is a lot of painting and final touches being made to the construction of the space. The bar top is slated to be installed later this week. When all of that work is complete and the space is thoroughly cleaned, the carpets, furniture and kitchen equipment will be installed. This includes the tables for the bowling alley, bar stools, and diner booths. All of this is refinished vintage furniture.

Another notable aspect of the Highball that is in progress is the tile work in the restrooms. You can see the color scheme and pattern in the photo included here. It looks like the women’s room is almost finished, with the men’s room following quickly.

  • Hello proprietors of “The Highball”!

First, I would like to say the place looks like it will be an awesome venue for many different kinds of events. I am wondering about obtaining information regarding employment once The Highball is open. Who would I contact in that regard?
Thanks for your time, and the updates too!
