I just got an exciting email from the Highball bar manager and chief mixologist Ryan Schibi. He has emerged from his spirit laboratory with a couple of taste-tempting island creations for tomorrow night. Both fresh cocktails are $7.
Goombay Smash
Coconut rum, cachaca, apricot brandy and pineapple
Parrot’s Head Punch
Vodka, passion fruit, watermelon, cranberry and grapefruit.
In addition to fine spirits, both of these cocktails will be made with fresh island fruits. If you aren’t familiar with cachaca, it’s the official drink of Brazil, a distillation of sugar cane juice and is the backbone of Brazil’s signature cocktail, the caipirinha. Brazil manufactures about 1.5 billion liters of cachaca every year and domestically consumes 99% of it.
The Goombay of the soon-to-be-famous Goombay Smash is a reference to a style of Bahamian music and the drum used to goatskin drum create it. One too many Goombay Smash cocktails and you may be able to recreate those same island rhythms in your head the next morning, free of charge.
We’re also going to be experimenting this evening with some fresh coconuts and all manner of island rum. Come by tomorrow night (November 20) for Birth of the Smooth: an Evening of Yacht Rock Karaoke tomorrow night at 11:00 PM and find out if this final experiment bears fruit.
Admission is free and every drink gets a paper umbrella. Even the $3.00 Lone Star. Details and still incomplete song list here.
