There are two truths in life. One is that nothing was as cool as the original Nintendo gaming console. (Play Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! and try to say I’m wrong.) The other is that mainstream music sucks and is severely lacking in creativity. There’s a group of musicians who understand and embrace both these ideas, and they’re doing it in the 8-bit music scene.
If you haven’t heard any 8-bit music, I feel bad for you. Artists have taken the music from computer and gaming consoles like the Nintendo Gameboy and Atari Commodore 64 and tweaked it like a mad scientist to create a sound unlike anything you’ve heard. What results in concert is an organic and absolutely infectious set of beats that will take you back to the days when cheat codes and Trapper Keepers were the hit, while also keeping you on the dance floor until the early hours. It’s an event The Highball is proud to present, Datapop 2.0: Music of the Nintendo Gameboy.
It’s an 18 and up show on November 28th, with doors opening at 10:00 p.m. Allow me to go Levar Burton and say you don’t have to take my word for it. To help get you ready for the concert, here’s a rundown of the artists that will keep you moving. Click the artist’s name to go listen to some of their songs.
Starpause is known for his catchy chains, interaction with the crowd and non-stop energy. He’s a chip junkie that will get you addicted.
Corpus Christi’s IAYD (I Am Your Destruction) assaults the senses with his heavy-blasting Gameboy adaptations. He’ll be right at home in Austin.
Prince_S is part of the Austin 8-bit scene and you’re going to love the integration of guitar with the Gameboy experience. Check out the song Oh Molly, I’ve Missed You on the page. It’s going to kill live.
Sievert, Houston’s self-described “formidable space explorer bent on mapping out the galaxy and foraging new technologies for the good of mankind” is going to light the stage up with his intense set. You have to love anyone influenced by Nikola Tesla.
8BK-ok already played the SXSW 8bit Showcase. Now The Highball is going to be treated to their 8-bit cover tunes. That’s right, cover tunes. How bad ass is that? Check out this sweet cover of Bone Thugs N’ Harmony’s Crossroads from their side effort, BiPFT!, and you’ll see why we’re excited to have them here.
For ticket info, email us at info@thehighball.com. We will answer any question ya have. See you at the show. Get ready to watch bands work those thumbs as you move your feet.
Special thanks to the international game developers organization for helping out with this party!
